What is Yoga for Seniors?
As we progress in age it is more important how we do things rather than how many things we can do. Basically is a supported, gentle and slow-paced yoga flow that includes a number of seated and standing asanas/poses.
The use of props allows people to move into poses that they might not otherwise be able to do without a chair, blocks, straps or a wall.
Some of the benefits may be:
- strengthens muscles
- improves balance
- reduces Anxiety
- decreases the risk of falls
- improves sleeping habits
- helps to breathe easier
- alleviate aches and pains
- boosts your mood
How does a class go?
It is not very different than a regular Yoga class.
Gentle yoga classes offer a variety of asanas and no two classes are ever alike. A session could be from 45 to 60 minutes, and these are the elements of a complete class:
- centering and breathing (pranayama)
- warming and awakening the body (Surya Namaskara, sun salutations)
- moving progressively from simple to more “challenging”* postures through smooth transitions
- self exploration: taking a look at your own feelings, confront your inner critic
- deep relaxation
- meditation
*Yoga poses can be modified to fit your comfort level and physical ability
Classes are necessarily small or individual so that each person can receive detailed attention to ensure they are safe and properly supported.
Do I need special props?
Yes, the use of props is a must. You don’t need to invest in special props as almost everything you will need for a gentle yoga session can be found at home like: chair, blanket, pillows, straps, books and a wall!
Who can practice?
Anyone can practice it! Supported gentle Yoga is for those with limited mobility or people who are recovering from an injury. However, it is very important to consult with your doctor before starting a new exercise program, particularly if you have major health concerns or injuries.
